Big changes...

You all know the Shores family never does anything the normal way, right? Well, we're at it again.

The wife and I are at that stage in life where the kids are getting ready to move on, and most normal people in our situation would be working on being "Empty Nesters." Well, we're finally "Full Nesters."

Cori is (at this moment) over the coast of Newfoundland, on her way back home after a couple hour layover in Chicago. The parents have officially turned over control of the house to the kids, and flown the coop.

Cori is eager to get back to her life, her friends, her job, her schooling... and her cat. Palmer is planning on picking her up from the airport this evening... he'll have to leave a get together with all the folks from work, and the first test for the kids is whether he takes her straight home, or drags her back to the bowling alley (and the party). They both work at the same restaurant, so they know all the same people, but after flying 4500+ miles in 23 hours, I'm not sure she'll be up for socializing much.

Right now, the line is -4 on him dragging her back to the bowling alley, but circumstances might change those odds as the time approaches, so get your bets in now!

I'm in the process of planning trips to have "in the can," so at any point the wife can say "Let's take a long weekend," and I can present her with multiple options. I've got a couple of day trips planned, and 3 weekend trips planned thus far. I'll post about the trips as we take them, but feel free to send us your suggestions on where we should go.

  1. When you're back in The Hague and you have an opportunity and if its still there, try visiting Madurodam theme park. It a scale model of a Dutch city, You'll feel like Gulliver from "Gulliver's travels". You should also tour Amsterdam there are many interesting sites and experiences. I spent days walking along the streets. Anne Frank house, Van Gogh Museum. Holland has many hidden treasures to see. Enjoy your time there.

    1. Hey, Don - thanks for checking in! I'm not sure when our next trip to The Hague, but I'll add Madurodam to the list for next time... looks pretty cool! We're planning on hitting Amsterdam as well, but that won't be a dedicated work trip, as the wife doesn't have an office there. We may add on time to a work trip for Amsterdam, or just go on our own.

Before I left, we talked about Friedberg - turns out, that's on the same S line that our town is on... but our line is shut down for construction right now. Once it opens back up (or our car arrives), we'll be heading up there to look around at "Elvis-ville." Thanks again for the info!

    2. I've driven the roadways/autobahn and ridden the train many times between Frankfurt and Friedberg. August 11-14th this year is the big celebration of Elvis in both Bad Nauheim and Friedberg. Activities start at 1900hrs on the 11th with a live concert by an Elvis impersonator. I have a brochure of the event that I received from a friend. The town of Bad Nauheim is were Elvis and his family lived while he was stationed in Germany. There are bronze statues of Elvis commemorating his time in Bad Nauheim and Friedberg. August 16, 1977 was the date of Elvis's death. Enjoy yourself and good luck.

  2. I spoke of another interesting place to visit. Saalburg which is a Roman fort located near Bad Homburg, Hesse. It's a reconstructed Roman fort in Germany from around AD 90.
